Bunkai, also known as analysis, is the study and interpretation of the martial applications of the techniques and movements found in traditional karate kata (pre-arranged sequences of movements). Bunkai training involves analyzing the movements in kata and understanding their practical applications in self-defense situations. This can involve breaking down the movements and techniques in kata and practicing them in a variety of scenarios with a partner. It's one of the most important aspects of karate training but is missing from many dojo. It helps practitioners to understand the practical applications of the techniques and movements found in kata, and to develop their self-defense skills.
